WHAT SIZE FOOTBALL SHOULD YOU BUY?
Whether you’re buying a football for a kickabout in the garden or a ball for competitive club or school matches, it’s important to ensure the correct football ball size is used by players. Playing with the wrong size football can hinder technical progress/development, reduce overall enjoyment of the game and even increase the risk of injury.
Playing with the wrong football ball size can also make it difficult to transfer any skills or techniques learnt in training into a match, which is why we’ve created this guide that includes a football size chart based on FA guidelines to ensure you know what size football you should be using.
FOOTBALL SIZE GUIDE BY AGE
The Football Association recommends the following football sizes for each age group listed below:
- Size 2 footballs – Under 5
- Size 3 footballs – Under 7, Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10
- Size 4 footballs – Under 11, Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14
- Size 5 footballs – Under 15, Under 16 and Senior Football
The English FA updated their ball size guidelines for youth players on June 1st, 2020. The updated guidelines now state that under 10 players should use a size 3 football for training and regulation matches, rather than the previously recommended size 4 football.
In Wales, Scotland and Ireland ball size guidelines remain the same, and it is still recommended that Under 10 players use a size 4 football.
